Rock Formation & Identification Kit

Students use supplied rock specimens to distinguish between igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Activities develop an understanding of the processes of rock formation and classification, and relate different types of rocks to the processes of the rock cycle. Exercises include classifying igneous rocks as extrusive or intrusive, sedimentary rocks as clastic, organic or chemical, and metamorphic rocks as foliated or nonfoliated. Material for 40 students.
