Measurement of ion concentration is routinely performed with food, water, pharmaceutical and biological samples. Measurements are generally simpler and faster than other analytical techniques and require less sample preparation. ISE meters can display direct concentration measurements in various units.

Ionplus electrodes with a solid state membrane have a sensing membrane made of a uniform or homogeneous solid substance. Ionplus electrodes with a plastic membrane have an ion exchange material contained in a plastic membrane. Silver/Sulfide electrode can be optimized for silver or sulfide analysis by using different filling solutions.

Standard Combination Ion Selective electrodes also contain the sensing electrode and reference in one body. Gas sensing electrodes respond to dissolved gases in solution.
